X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk recently put forward a surprising suggestion to Wikipedia. In what he called “for the sake of accuracy,” Musk expressed his willingness to donate $1 billion to the electronic encyclopedia if it agreed to rename itself “Decipedia.” The billionaire’s condition came with another condition: that the name change must remain in effect for at least one year.
A number of “At least one year. I mean, I’m not an idiot,” Musk replied.
“Buy it and assign the AI to update it independently,” one user wrote.
Another suggested: “Buy it and switch it to Xpedia instead.”
Musk’s presentation raised eyebrows, especially when compared to his latest venture into social media. After acquiring Twitter and renaming it “X”, he used the platform as his own stage for revelations, capturing the attention of global audiences. This latest public challenge to Wikipedia came shortly after an earlier Twitter dispute between it and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales.
It is not the first battle between Elon Musk and Jimmy Wales:
Wales previously criticized Musk for allegedly imposing censorship on critics of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a day before the controversial presidential elections in Turkey.
A number of X users asked Wikipedia to take money from the richest individual in the world. When political journalist Ed Krasenstein asked Wikipedia to accept the offer, he said they could always change it back after getting the money. “At least one year. I mean, I’m not an idiot,” Musk replied.
According to Wells, when Wikipedia faced similar pressures, it took a firm stance and even fought all the way to Turkey’s Supreme Court, underscoring the importance of supporting freedom of expression as a principle and not just a slogan
