A new type of Covid-19 ‘Eris’ Variant is spreading across the UK, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) – already making up one in seven new cases.
Known scientifically as EG.5.1, it is descended from the Omicron variant of Coronavirus Disease .
The UKHSA is monitoring its spread in the country due to an increase in cases internationally, particularly in Asia, and it was classified as variable here on 31 July.
The part of England with the highest rate of Covid-19 ‘Eris’ Variant in the UK
In the week of July 10, one in nine cases was low.
According to the latest data, it now constitutes 14.6% of cases, making it the second most common in the UK.
It shows up to be spreading quickly and may be one of the reasons for the later spike in cases and hospitalizations.
The incidence of COVID-19 has been escalating, as evidenced by a surge from 3.7% of 4,403 respiratory cases in the previous week to 5.4% of 4,396 cases in the current week.
The most recent data also indicated that the rate of COVID-19 hospital admissions has risen to 1.97 per 100,000 population, compared to 1.17 per 100,000 in the previous report by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Authorities say they are observing the circumstance “closely” as coronavirus case rates continue to rise.
“We’ve also seen a slight rise in hospitalization rates in most age groups, particularly among the elderly,” said Dr Mary Ramsey, UKHSA’s head of immunization.
In general, the quantity of admissions continues to be quite minimal, and currently, we are not witnessing a comparable escalation in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) admissions.
“We shall continue to vigilantly scrutinize these statistics”
UKHSA figures show that the Arcturus XBB.1.16 variant – another descendant of Omicron – is the most prevalent. It constitutes 39.4% of all cases.
Health workers who pick their noses are at higher risk of contracting Covid-19 ‘Eris’ Variant, and the UK faces other major risks such as another pandemic and the assassination of a public figure
The World Health Organization (WHO) began tracking the EG.5.1 variant just over two weeks ago.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that although people are better protected by vaccines and past infections, countries must not let their guard down.
He stated that the World Health Organization (WHO) persists in recommending individuals at elevated risk to don masks in densely populated environments, receive booster shots as advised, and guarantee satisfactory indoor ventilation and we urge governments to maintain, not dismantle, the systems they built for COVID-19.
